Everybody needs good neighbours!
Although our plan is to one day get off the dock for now we are tied up. That doesn't mean we can't make the most of it though. We have some really great times and great people all around us in Dockyard. Yesterday I reflected on this as we played before dinner.
We got home and Jacob was still asleep in the pumpkin seat in the car so Marley and I decided that a picnic snack on the grass while mummy washed the car was in order. (OK Mummy may have decided!)
We parked on the lawn in front of our gate and laid out our blanket (which I always keep in the back of the car) I ran Marley and Jacob down to the boat (she insisted on staying on the dock with him) while I quickly got together grapes, crackers and cheese. We set up camp next to the car and I washed as Jacob slept and Marley snacked. This was much to the amusement of the tourists walking by who asked for directions back to the ferry, and to the cruise ship workers who have taken up fishing at our gate.
As in all good car washing you must first rinse... 1 bucket of water, then wash.... 2 buckets.... and then rinse again....3 buckets! That's all fine if your hose reaches your car, or the tap is next to your car but I had to keep running back down to the dock to fill my bucket. I also had to carry Jacob in the car seat and get Marley to follow along all three times. (I couldn't exactly leave them there having a picnic even though I was only feet away!) Marley has her stubborn trait which meant I had to keep waiting for her to finish "just one more grape", or "last three crackers"! We got the car cleaned and Jacob woke up just at the end.
We packed up and headed back to the boat where Marley saw her toy box still on the dock from the last time we went out and attempted to wash the boat. She insisted on playing and since we still had an hour before dinner I allowed. We pulled everything out and enjoyed our time playing on the dock.
Our neighbours probably have no need to read this blog as they are an intricate part of this. As we picnicked on the grass Henry- Jacobs new boat buddy arrived home from the ferry. Tom, Marley's biggest fan also arrived back from the ferry and stopped by to play a little and our closest neighbour gave me great inspiration to not only wash my car but our boat as well. He has begun wiping everything down and putting up his old canvas and bimini from last year. Marley also made a point of letting our newest neighbours know that leaving trash behind is not acceptable either. She gasped as we went up the ramp on one of our bucket trips as there was trash in the water and exclaimed for all to hear "the trash in the water is VERY BAD, it will kill all the fish especially plastics bags for turtles, this is VERY BAD mummy!". I guess the summer season has begun; cheers to longer days and more outside activities!
This blogs intent is to provide a living journal of our experience raising our children on boats. Please ENJOY, COMMENT and SHARE!!!

Battle with the Bimini
Before I start.. you all should know I WON! :)
This morning we were finally well organized. Maybe because daddy was left in charge last night or maybe because I had 3 hours to prepare this morning but we made the ferry on time with all of our belongings and children! I went to bed last night with a terrible tooth ache and woke for the 4am feed to a very happy and active baby who refused to go back to bed. Never mind the ferry was late then Jacob did a massive poo as we arrived into Hamilton and then proceeded to perform some projectile vomit for all to see on the ferry back! Haha and there I thought it was going to be a smooth ride.
I arrived home and quickly bathed and fed my little munchkin before his nap (he was exhausted as he too had been up since 4am!) I then got on top of the many projects I have been leaving for 'while i'm off with Jacob'. Managed to vacuum and get the Stingrays newsletter done before lunch.
After lunch I figured i'd tackle putting the bimini back up. We have a great bimini that covers our companionway and provides shade over the main hatch. In the recent bad weather we had taken it down as it is old and would easily tear in the winds. The first time we attempted to put it up after buying the boat we really struggled and since it has been a challenge to beat the time before! I figure myself fairly good at packing and things of that sort however puzzles of the engineering nature do stump me. I can never figure out if I have it backwards and which part zips into what. Because you have to put in on, on the boat its hard to see the 'big picture' while you are doing it.
Anyway I got going while Jacob continued to nap. Amazing what that child can sleep through. After much cursing, a few straddle positions that my old gym teacher would be proud of, many clunks on the head with the heavy metal poles I managed to get it up. There is always one point that I am ready to give up, this is when I am pulling the back pole into the middle pole to try and get the zipper to line up even though i'm not sure it is the actual zip that goes together. Then somehow it all clicks and it slides into place perfectly. I always hope that the people on the dock only catch that moment as they walk by instead of the circus mishap that is actually putting the bimini back on!
Planning for a beautiful night of evening cruising with friends :)

Name that Noise
After a toddler filled day of gymnastics and birthday parties we arrived back in Dockyard around 9:30pm. Marley had fallen asleep on the car ride from dinner so it was easy enough to put her down. Jacob on the other hand had been asleep since his last feeding around 5:30pm and was due to wake up and feed (and I was hoping play for a bit) so he could settle down for a nice marathon sleep. Oh, new parents have no such luck! We played a movie from itunes and I attempted to wake him and give him a feed but he was not having it. After the movie and no waking I was a little more forceful and he ate about 6oz but dozed in and out through the whole feed. I put him to bed hoping he wouldn't wake too soon after and praying that if I went to bed right away I could get maybe 6 hours.
Tonight was a particularly blowy night. We have had bad weather all day; heavy rain this morning and strong winds building all night. On a boat there are very distinct noises that over time you can identify and not worry about. We are still getting used to those noises. Finally snuggled in bed there was a low creaking almost sounding like a 'coo'. Mark asked me if it was Jacob stirring in his bassinet. I had to double check it wasn't him. Soon after there was an inconsistent tapping.... the strap to the bimini that actually serves no purpose that I had ment to tie down weeks ago. Up I got because I knew it would keep me up all night. The worst noises are the ones you can't identify because you always think the worst. The hull of a boat has the amazing ability to magnify any sounds from the deck, which can make it that much more frightening. For example; a few empty baskets left on deck blowing from forward to aft can sound more like a dead body being dragged above your head than a few pieces of plastic.
Once we named most of the noises we began to sleep and sure enough poor Marley's coughing began. That was the beginning of the long morning that has me up writing this now. Poor thing, she just can't seem to kick this cough although it has gotten better. We have tried everything even an old remedy of putting vapor rub on her feet and covering them with socks before bed. She eventually came into our bunk and cried and tossed and turned for an hour or so. Soon after she settled Jacob decided to wake to be fed. Now he's wide awake and looking to play. :( When he finally goes back to sleep, my intent is to go with him... not sure where i'm going to rest though.... Marley is sprawled across our entire bunk, Mark retreated her her bunk and the couches are full with Jacob and all his gear as well as the weekend's laundry. One thing is for sure, I wont let the noises bother me now!
